Sledge, a doctor's son from a proud,
educated family, eschewed officers'
training, preferring to serve in a Marine
rifle company. An infantry veteran of both
Peleliu and Okinawa, Sledge returned to
Alabama to become a professor of
biology. He distilled his combat
experiences into a remarkable and
evocative memoir, With the Old Breed,
published by the Oxford University
Press and the United States
Naval Institute Press.
